UX Vision Canvas
Questions about using the canvas, running it with your team and the method behind it.

Can we use the canvas for free?
Yes, that is the idea behind the canvas. It is meant to help all product teams, so you are free to use it and to share it unchanged.
May we adapt or translate the canvas, or use it in training?
You are free to use the canvas in training, client projects and your own team. It is licensed under CC BY-ND 4.0, so modified or translated versions may not be published or shared without permission.
If you are planning an adaptation or translation, just send me a note.
Does the canvas work remotely?
Yes. Import the PDF into your digital whiteboard, lock it as the background and fill in the areas with digital notes. The steps stay the same as in the room.
How do we credit the canvas?
When sharing the canvas, the attribution “UX Vision Canvas · Dominique Winter · ux-vision.com · CC BY-ND 4.0” is enough.
For academic work, please cite the publication on developing the UX vision. The reference and a BibTeX entry are on the download page.
Running the workshop
How long does it take to complete the canvas?
This depends very much on the work that has already been done. If a lot is already known about the users and the value of the product is clearly defined, the canvas can be completed within a few hours.
The core, developing the UX vision, usually takes 60–120 minutes. This varies greatly between teams, and more time does not necessarily lead to better results.
Who should be involved in developing the canvas?
The canvas is a vehicle for developing a shared mental model of the intended UX of your product. It is therefore advisable to involve the people who make product decisions.
Keep the group small, though: the more people are involved, the longer decisions take.
Do we need prior knowledge of UX?
No. The canvas guides you step by step through the questions that matter for a UX vision. It helps if someone on the team has experience facilitating workshops and walks through the process once beforehand.
What if we lack knowledge about our users?
Keep going and record the gap. Alongside the five steps, write down what prevents you from knowing more about users, measurements, product and features.
Address these blind spots as soon as possible – otherwise you run a high risk.
Method and background
How does a UX vision differ from a product vision?
A product vision gets to the point of why a product is valuable. The UX vision describes what experience people should have when using it – that is, how they ideally talk about the product.
The two belong together: develop a UX vision and integrate it into your product vision.
How do we measure UX factors in practice?
Often with standardised questionnaires. The UEQ+ is modular: you choose the scales that match your UX factors, and each factor is measured with four questions and summarised into one value.
From this you can derive concrete goals, for example “attractiveness ≥ 1.2”. Other metrics such as web analytics data are a useful addition.
What kinds of products is the canvas suitable for?
For very different products. What matters is which UX factors count in your product category: a web shop above all needs to be trustworthy and offer good content, word processors prioritise usefulness and dependability, games immersion and stimulation.
That is exactly why every team develops its own UX vision.
How often should we review our UX vision?
The canvas is a living document and should be maintained continuously. Regularly review the UX of your product, compare the measurements with your UX goals and adapt your plan.
Which UX factors are there?
A common selection includes 16 factors – from efficiency and trust to immersion. It is an example: you decide which factors to look at based on your product and your users.

Product Vision Interview
Questions about the role play for a shared product vision.
About the Product Vision InterviewUsing it
When do we use the Product Vision Interview?
When the team is not yet clear on why your product is valuable – ideally before you develop the UX vision. The result feeds into the product area of the UX Vision Canvas.
How many people does it take?
One round is played by three people: promoter, interested person and observer. Larger teams split into several groups of three.
Does the Product Vision Interview work remotely?
It is possible, but the conversation thrives on direct dialogue. If you can, run the exercise in person in a suitable room.
What is the result?
A short, emotional product description. It serves as a basis for a Product Vision Board or a positioning statement.
Using it
How does UX Poker differ from Planning Poker?
Planning Poker estimates how much effort it takes to implement a user story. UX Poker estimates how strongly it influences the user experience – for each selected UX factor on a scale from −2 to +2.
The two estimates complement each other: together they show effort and expected UX impact in the backlog.
How many UX factors should we estimate?
No more than five to seven, otherwise estimating becomes inefficient. If you work with the UX Vision Canvas, use the three to five factors of your UX vision.
Do we need a UX vision before using UX Poker?
It is recommended. The teams in the study emphasised that the UX vision must be clear and the UX factors explained understandably. Only then does everyone estimate with the same picture in mind.
Whose perspective do we estimate from?
From the perspective of the people who will use the product. Personas help you put yourself in their shoes instead of starting from yourself.
In practice
Does UX Poker work remotely?
Yes. The UX Poker study was conducted entirely via video conferencing. A polling or voting tool speeds up secret estimation.
Can we also estimate epics with UX Poker?
Yes. The teams in the study applied UX Poker to epics and confirmed that it works well.
Where do we get the cards?
The cards are available free of charge as a PDF to print. One sheet contains two sets of cards.
